You Capture: Shapes

I had a lot of fun with this week's You Capture theme. So much so that I had to force myself to stop taking pictures. I can see that I'm drawn to round shapes and hearts.

Letter beads that I have used in many a project. There used to be a lot of heart beads, but that was the only one left!

I use bubble wrap in my collage painting. I think I used this one last in a collage featuring a girl swinging in a tree. One of these days I'll have to post some of my collages/paintings.

This is not the first time my buttons have been featured here.

I have been hoarding these heart pins for over a year. I bought them on clearance after Valentine's 2009. The I am loved pins came from Helzberg Jewelry and I've been saving them even longer. I can't decide what I'm going to do with them.

This is doily another thing I've been saving for a long time. I plan to spray paint over it in a collage.

Gemma made this colorful bracelet last week when she was off school.

Yet another thing I've been saving for years. (Are you noticing a theme here?) Don't have any plan in mind for it, but I thought it was too cool to throw away. I'll use it someday.

Ah, buttons again. I love buttons.

And I Quote...

Elizabeth Prentiss in Stepping Heavenward:

"My darling, precious children! For their sakes I am continually constrained to seek after an ammended, a sanctified life; what I want them to become I must become myself."

Photo Challenge: Hands on Fun

I had a hard time deciding between two pictures for this I Heart Faces challenge. It was between this one I took on a whim Saturday testing out our new lens and one focusing on Gemma and her Honey Grandma's hands while making cookies. Obviously this one won out. It's technically a better picture. Plus I love the chipped nail polish and hint of green marker on her hand.

You Capture: Kisses

Here's my You Capture entry this week. Just some simple black and white pictures of my husband and me. I don't know if you can see or not, but the white specks in the upper left hand corners are Gemma running around.

You Capture: Work

This weeks You Capture is work. I don't work in a traditional way, I'm not employed. I'm blessed to have a husband who provides well for our little family and agrees that home with our daughter is the best place for me at this stage in our lives. Of course, that doesn't mean a stay at home mom doesn't work. In fact, I firmly believe that a mom with kids at home under age three works harder than just about any type of paying job there is!

That said, my work load around home lately has been pretty light. I have a first grader, so she's in school for a good part of the day. Since she's gone, it's easier to keep the house clean. And then of course, there's my elbow. I haven't written much about it, I think I mentioned it once here. It's been an issue all of this time and Matt has taken over a lot of the house work. I've been in physical therapy and have been improving to the point where I'm slowly allowed to increase my workload. And paint, and scrapbook, and do other creative things that I've been unable to do for quite some time. It feels so good to be able to go back to some regular things, even if it is only a little bit at first.

So anyway, here is some of my work at this point in my life.

Creating, painting, collage. I love that my desk is messy again with paint and scraps of paper that are my own and not my daughters!

Reading probably isn't work, especially since I love it, but since I've been limited in what I can do, I read to keep my mind busy while keeping my arm still. I try to read things that are profitable, encouraging, and challenging to my walk with the Lord. I consider it part of my 'job' to make sure that I am redeeming my time with things that promote spiritual growth.
My work includes preparing meals for my family. This mixer is a great aid in that. It's probably my favorite kitchen appliance, besides the dishwasher.

While my ability to cook was never gone, my ability to do things like use a rolling pin were. I'm happy to say that part of my work this week was to roll out some sugar cookies for my daughter's class without any pain!
Errand running, grocery shopping, meal planning, keeping the fridge and pantry stocked comes with the territory of being a stay home mom.

Helping with homework is a part of my daily 'work', although I must say that Gemma is really smart and is becoming quite the independent worker. As the year goes on she needs my help less and less.

And of course, picking up is work that I do everyday. Especially my daughter's shoes. She leaves them everywhere. She probably has too many pairs. It's not uncommon for me to find three or four pairs of shoes spread throughout the house on any given day.

As I look back on my 'work', I can see I have it pretty easy. I do look forward too taking on some of my old tasks though, even the laundry!

And I Quote...

"Isn't it strange... that there are some so-called Christians who would be shocked to have the teachings of Jesus questioned, and as equally shocked to have any of them practiced?"

Upside Down

I have a real problem with Christians. I have this same problem with my Christian self.

It started on a Sunday morning during worship a few weeks ago. We were sing the song Not To Us, specifically the lyrics in the second verse:

    Send Your holy fire on this offering;
Let our worship burn for the world to see,
It's not for us, it's all for You.

My problem is this: We don't really mean what we say. We sing these worship songs, listen to a sermon on Sunday with no real intention of actually following through with what we've just said and heard. What would it mean, what would happen if we really truly were "doers"?

Take that song for instance. What is it that we are supposedly offering the Lord? Our lives. What exactly does it mean? It means that we are asking the Lord to purify our lives the way fine metals are purified, through extreme heat that causes the impurities, or dross, to rise to the top so it can be scooped up and discarded. It's an intense and painful process. That is we were asking the Lord to do. Sanctify us.

"He will sit as a refiner and a purifier of silver; He will purify the sons of Levi, And purge them
as gold and silver, That they may offer to the LORD An offering in righteousness." Malachi 3:3

Now the words, "Let our worship burn for the world to see", what does that mean? I can tell you this: our worship doesn't "burn for the world to see" within the walls of a church.Worship isn't just songs, worship is life encompassing. The way we live our lives is supposed to be an act of worship to God.

There's a reason that we're supposed to live our lives in worship to the Lord. We are supposed to be living testimonies, sharing God's love and salvation through the example of our lives with the lost, dying world around us. We are the ones God has chosen to use. Not just pastors, missionaries, and Christian speakers, you, me, everyday Christians. We're not off the hook.

The truth is, Jesus should be turning our lives upside down. That's what that song is asking for. And as our lives are changed and it is apparent to the world, it should start to change others too.

"These who have turned the world upside down have come here too." Acts 17:6b

So how do we turn our world upside down? It starts with me. It starts with you. And it deserves it's own post, so I'll write about it later and link back to it.

You Capture: Faces

This week's You Capture challenge was faces, and what a challenge! Sadly, all my faces have left for the day. Unless of course, you count my cats, but I'm always telling Gemma as much as we love them, Cyril and Methodius are not people. So it was into the photo archives for me!
Gemma, Fall 2009

Spring 2007
Obviously I didn't take this one and it's pretty old, but it's one of my all time favorite pictures, so I had to include it!

Spring 2007
This was from the same photo shoot, but I did take this one. It's another one of my favorites. Gemma was only four then. She looks so tiny!

Matt, Summer 2008
Another older one. I don't have many pictures of just my husband. I'll have to remedy that! He's not fond of having his picture taken and when we're together he has the camera more than I do.

Me, Winter 2010
I didn't take this one either, Matt did last weekend. I can't do self portraits, they never seem to turn out. We have a nice tripod, but I need a remote. I can't do the self timer thing, I'm just not fast enough!
